What Associates Need to Know About Lateral Moves

"The recession has turned associate career paths upside down. Legions of associates unfortunately lost their jobs, and countless others who were eager to start their careers were deferred and shunted toward short-term positions they never envisioned. Even those whose jobs were spared were impacted, as compensation systems in many firms were overhauled to better fit the new world order."

Immigration and Customs Enforcement

ICE Summer Volunteer Internship Interviews Friday, 11 am

This Friday, March 5, two ICE attorneys will be on assignment near Gainesville and have set aside some time to visit UF to interview any students who might be interested in a volunteer internship position. The ICE attorneys will be at UF between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday. Below is a brief description of what the Orlando ICE office does and what volunteer interns might expect from the experience.

"The Orlando Office of the Chief Counsel is a component of the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement. We represent the Department of Homeland Security before the U.S. Immigration Court, generally pursuing the removal (deportation) of non-citizens who are present in the U.S. in violation of the law or who are legally present but have been convicted of crimes subjecting them to removal. Many of the cases we handle also involve asylum claims or other requests for discretionary forms of relief from removal. Volunteer summer interns are typically assigned to work with our attorneys on legal research projects, drafting briefs and memoranda of law, and reviewing charging documents. Immigration law training is provided throughout the summer, and interns are encouraged to observe cases in court regularly. In some instances, interns have had the opportunity to first-chair hearings under the supervision of an attorney. In the past, volunteer interns have been eligible for externship credits from UF, though these details would have to be worked out between the school and the intern. Please note also that applicants will be subject to a fairly extensive background check."

If you are interested please email Justin Bleak (JUSTBLEAK@UFL.EDU) your resume and cover letter. Also, if you are interested, but can't meet this Friday, it is possible that interviews may be set up in Orlando.

Looking for productive ways to use your free time over Spring Break? Consider:
  • Networking
Check with the local Bar Association in your home town or wherever you are visiting to see if there are any social, community or educational events you could attend.

  • Informational Interviews
Don’t know what you want to do with your J.D.? Contact attorneys in various fields to see if they can spare a few minutes, or more, to hand down some advice. Don’t forget to give them your resume and ask for names of other people you may talk to.

  • Shadowing
Arrange to sit in on a court proceeding, mediation or deposition. Seek out a substantive project, and get to know as many people as possible.

  • Preparing targeted mailings
Take time to research firms and use this information in your cover letters to show your interest in that particular firm. This will help distinguish your cover letter from the many others that firms receive.
