2011 Loyola Patent Law Interview Program

DEADLINE to Register: MARCH 7th (this Monday)

To: All Law Students Returning For Fall Semester 2011

Re: 2011 Loyola Patent Law Interview Program

Loyola University Chicago School of law is hosting the 2011 Patent Law Interview Program on Thursday, July 28 and Friday, July 29 in Chicago, Illinois. This is a nationwide interview program that targets patent law employers, rising 2L and 3L students, and students in Intellectual Property LLM programs.

Last year roughly 100 employers, 180 law schools, and 1,600 law students from across the country participated in the program. The program is entirely pre-selected, which means that students submit resumes and bid on interviews with the employers they are interested in, and employers then review the resumes of the students who bid on them and select the students they wish to interview at the program. Last year, approximately half of the participating students were selected for interviews.

Students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering or a technical science should consider registering for the program. You do not need to be patent bar eligible to register, although the vast majority of employers participating in the program are seeking patent bar eligible students.

For more information on the program, please refer to the program website at http://www.luc.edu/law/career/patent_students.html.

Online student registration for this year’s Patent Law Interview Program will begin on Monday, February 14 and close on Monday, March 7. On February 14, a “Register Now” link will appear on the above web page. At this stage of registration, you will only need to enter some basic information (you will upload your resume and bid on interviews later in the semester). Please note that our school is listed alphabetically as UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA LEVIN COLLEGE OF LAW on the registration form’s drop down menu of law schools.

There is a non-refundable $35 dollar registration fee which you must pay by credit card to complete your online registration. Please have your credit card ready when you register.

Please direct any questions about the program to the Patent Program Liaison in our office, JESSIE HOWELL, HOWELLJE@LAW.UFL.EDU .

Behavioral Interviewing Gains Momentum in Law Firm Hiring

"As on-campus recruiting season hits top gear, potential law firm hires might not notice anything unusual about the questions they are asked, but the underlying goals of law firm interviewers have shifted.
No longer does the ability to quickly analyze a court opinion or a lawyer's status on law review earn a guaranteed spot in a summer program. Though still important, intertwined with questions about GPA and resumes are ones that probe how attorneys will handle tough or unexpected situations. They are pretty typical for a job interview, but the goal for law firms now is to see how new attorneys can handle the sometimes stressful law firm environment and, even more, whether they can provide real world value to clients beyond just handing in strong work product.
The concept is called behavioral interviewing and helps interviewers gauge future job performance on how interviewees handled previous situations. It is also called competency-based interviewing, which falls right in line with law firms' move toward competency-based advancement."

Video Conferencing Available

UF Law is a member of Law School Connect (LSC), a nationwide remote interviewing network providing videoconferencing services to law schools for legal recruiting through law firm sponsorships. LSC’s membership includes law schools, law firms, legal non-profits, public service agencies and courts. For interviews with non-local employers, you may now be able to use videoconferencing. While there are times when an in-person interview is preferable, videoconferencing may provide a potential employer with an additional option. This is particularly relevant in the case of judicial clerkship interviews because judges have free access to the network. If you are interested in using this no-cost service for your interviewing needs, please contact Wanda Chapman in the Center for Career Development for more information.

New Graduates Can Stand Out In Bad Economy

Martin R. Press, a shareholder at the Fort Lauderdale office of Gunster Yoakley & Stewart has provided advice to third-year law students about how to land a good job. In this Daily Business Review article, Mr. Press provides his thoughts along with ten tips for standing apart from the competition. He notes that "sometimes the economy does well; sometimes the economy does poorly. It is difficult to time one’s entrance into law school, as no one knows what the economy will be three years later, and there’s truth to the cliche that timing is everything. We are in a downturn where litigation is up and real estate and commercial transactions are down. Opportunities exist — if you can keep the following concepts in mind." *Career Services Non-Discrimination Policy and Military Recruiting:The Levin College of Law, as an equal opportunity institution of higher education, conforms to all applicable laws prohibiting discrimination. The Center for Career Services (CCS) is committed to supporting an equal and fair evaluation of its law student and graduate job applicants on the basis of his or her individual merits. Therefore, the CCS is available only to employers whose employment practices are in compliance with these laws and policies. The one exception to this nondiscrimination policy is the military, which pursuant to its regulations, discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation. Such discrimination is clearly prohibited by the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) and Levin College of Law. Federal law, commonly referred to as the Solomon Amendment, provides that law schools that deny access to military recruiters may lose certain types of financial aid for students. As a result, AALS amended its regulations to allow its members to permit military recruiters on campus, provided sufficient ameliorative steps are taken by the school to express objection to the military’s discriminatory hiring practices. Accordingly, the Levin College of Law CCS permits on-campus military recruitment. To ameliorate the potentially discriminatory impact on its students, measures have been implemented. They include: posting of the office’s position statement that the military discriminates in a manner not permitted by the law school’s nondiscrimination policy; making available a collection of newsletters and materials related to gay and lesbian practitioners; and/or holding a forum/panel discussion on various forms of discrimination and how it impacts the legal profession. While the CCS recognizes that a career as a military lawyer can be rewarding and encourages students who are interested in speaking with military recruiters to do so, until the military makes its hiring decisions solely on the basis of an individual’s qualifications, it will be in violation of the AALS and Levin College of Law Center for Career Services’ policy.
